IMPORTANT HYPNOSIS INFORMATION

A few simple things about states of consciousness. We know that during any given day, we all travel through different categories of brain waves. There are four categories: Beta is the most alert, Theta is the inward and concentrated, Delta is when you are sleeping, and the final state is Alpha the most relaxed. When we relax you from Beta to Alpha, which is all we do with hypnosis, we reach a state of mind that allows new ideas, beliefs, and behavior suggestions to be accepted without the critical judgment of your every day Beta or “conscious” mind.

The lightest state of hypnosis (Alpha) is achieved easily. In this state you are 200 times more suggestible than your fully awake/aware state (Beta). You will be relaxed and focused and aware of what is happening. It is not necessary to be in some otherworldly trance to be in hypnosis.
Despite many doubters, everyone is capable of being hypnotized. This may vary to some degree. If you have ever daydreamed, you have engaged in self-hypnosis, which is simply directing your mind with the use of imagination. Hypnosis is essentially the same thing as guided imagery or vizualization. In fact, it's the same type of technique that Olympic athletes and stellar musicians use before successful performances.
Everyone enters a light hypnotic state (Alpha) several times a day, such as when watching tv, reading, playing video games and even when driving. You are in this state as you are falling asleep and waking up.

You do not have to worry about falling asleep during hypnosis. Your hearing is your security system, which never goes to sleep. You also do not have to worry about not being able to wake up from hypnosis, because a) you are not asleep, b) you cannot stay permanently in hypnosis, and c) less than 10% of the population achieve a deep trance.

A little interesting history of hypnosis:
You have probably heard of being mesmerized. An Austrian, Dr. Franz Mesmer brought to the attention of western scientists around 1770 what he called “animal magnetism” or “mesmerism.” His initial discovery involved using magnets to stop bleeding, etc. Later a priest named Abbe' Faria brought attention back to mesmerism and oriental hypnosis in Paris around 1814. He was the first to suggest that the process involved the power of the mind and the expectation of the subject. This led to a number of doctors using hypnotism for anesthesia in the early 1800s, including Esdaile. The Scottish surgeon James Braid was the first to popularize the term hypnotism in 1842. A neurologist Jean-Marin Charcot applied hypnosis to hysteria and began extensive experiments to determine it's applications. His pupil Pierre Janet first described the phenomenon of dissociation. By the 20th century, hypnosis for the use of suggestion became popularized particularly with the introduction of psychoanalysis. Use of hypnosis for surgery was officially approved by the British Medical Association in 1955 and by the American Medical Associaion in 1958. The Pope also approved it's limited use in 1956. In 1960, the American Psychological Association included hypnosis within psychology. Probably the most famous practitioner of hypnosis within psychology was Milton Erickson who developed the field extensively.
Since hypnosis has been used in the therapy, there have been numerous studies to evaluate the effectiveness of its use for various concerns. Here's a summary and I will also provide you with the references.

The top documented goals are Smoking Cessation and Weight-loss:
  • Smoking is successfully reduced between 81 and 90% according to studies
  • Weight-loss is shown to be greatly enhanced and maintained by hypnosis

Also:
  • Asthma: reduction of frequency of attacks and amount of medicine used
  • Arthritis: decrease in pan, anxiety and depression and increase in endorphins
  • Cancer: 50% reduction of pain in breast cancer patients, double survival rate in 10 year follow-ups with same patients, also reduction of anticipatory nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients.
  • Childbirth: 55% required no medication for pain relief during delivery, vs. 22% control group, also shorter stage 1 labor, higher Apgar scores and lower post-partum depression scores
  • Depression: combined with CBT, shows successful reduction of depression, anxiety and hopelessness
  • Migraine and Headaches: significant reduction in number of attacks
  • Phobias: significant reduction of test anxiety, reduced fears of public speaking, 50% improvement or cure of fear of flying
Now, keep in mind, you may be aware of everything that is said during the session and that is ok, you are still in hypnosis. Also, you are in control. You can always leave hypnosis by thinking the words “one, two, three.”

All Hypnosis sessions will be recorded as an mp3 (and stored confidentially). It will be provided to you, so that you may listen to it a few more times, as each listening will reinforce the suggestions

Now, can I answer any further questions?

Myths About Hypnosis
If you’ve ever seen a “hypnotist” who uses trance states as entertainment in a stage act, you’ve probably witnessed several of the myths about hypnosis in action. Legitimate clinical hypnotherapy practiced by a qualified professional is not the same process as that performed on stage.
  • Myth: When you’re under hypnosis, you surrender your free will.
  • Reality: Hypnosis is a heightened state of concentration and focused attention. When you’re under hypnosis, you don’t lose your personality, your free will or your personal strength.
  • Myth: When you’re under hypnosis, the hypnotherapist controls you.
  • Reality: You do hypnosis voluntarily for yourself. A hypnotherapist only serves as a knowledgeable guide or facilitator.
  • Myth: Under hypnosis, you lose consciousness and have amnesia.
  • Reality: A small number of people who go into a very deep hypnotic state experience spontaneous amnesia. However, most people remember everything that occurs under hypnosis.
  • Myth: You can be put under hypnosis without your consent.
  • Reality: Successful hypnosis depends on your willingness to experience it. Even with voluntary participation, not everyone can be led into a hypnotic state.
